Defense helps Paonia win 2nd straight 1A state crown

PAONIA — Time was dwindling Saturday, but enough remained for Buena Vista to dare hope it could still come back and claim a state title. Especially with the Demons on the Paonia 2-yard line with second down.
A run by Buena Vista quarterback Keegan Wentz lost a yard, but on third down, Wentz dove forward and gained two yards. Plus, an unsportsmanlike-conduct penalty against Paonia inched the ball closer to the end zone for fourth down.
But when Wentz tried to back in for a score on a sneak, Joel Simianer, Willy Darling and a gang of Eagles defenders stuffed Wentz for a 1-yard loss with 86 seconds remaining to secure Paonia’s second consecutive Class 1A state championship with a 21-7 victory at Town Park Field.
