Andrew Yates, right, walked away from MMA fighting 15 months ago after a loss. He gained more than 50 pounds, but has dropped 40, and Saturday night returned to the ring. He’s been working out with Paul Preuss to prepare for Cage Wars XX.

GOLDEN BOY IS BACK

Yates finds his hunger to fight again

Andrew Yates looked quick, fast, strong, vicious and ruthless.
He looked like Andrew Yates of old.
The Golden Boy, as he’s known for his long blonde hair and boyish good looks, was back in the ring Saturday night for the first time since Oct. 26, 2013.
It’s been a long 15 months for Yates, but those 462 days provided some powerful lessons and some searching of the soul.
That second-round loss left him beaten, demoralized and flooded his mind with doubt.
There’s nothing more harsh in sports than a brutal beating in the MMA cage. It bares the soul and makes strong competitors question their path.
The effect it had on Yates was unquestionably profound. Nothing like an unmerciful beating to ponder the meaning of life.
And then The Golden Boy got fat. He lost his hunger to fight, and without that hunger, the cage is no place you want to go.
