Area basketball fans this season have gotten a chance to watch Grand Junction High School guard Drew Derrieux, center, make plenty of shots like the one he made here against Eagle Valley earlier this season. It wasn’t long ago that Derrieux wasn’t an impact player for the Tigers before the senior’s offseason workout routine helped change that.

Hard work in offseason helps GJ senior guar Drew Derrieux excel

When talking about Drew Derrieux before his senior year, the phrase “he’s a really nice kid, but…” was common.

But he’s too skinny. But he’s too short. But he’s not seeing varsity minutes.

Derrieux heard all of that. It’s part of what got him out of bed at 5:20 a.m. every day this summer.

Now, he’s the leading scorer in the Southwestern League, he’s committed to play college basketball and he’s raised his profile in Colorado.
