Cuba Bess rounds second on his way to a triple in the sixth inning Tuesday for Fruita Monument.

SWL off and running

Defense helps keep Wildcats undefeated

One time it’s second baseman Chris Cordova flipping the ball to shortstop Dylan Row, who touches second base and relays the ball to first base.
The next time it’s Row with a soft toss to Cordova, who pivots at second, then fires to first.
Either way, Fruita Monument’s senior middle infielders are sudden death to rallies when a ground ball comes their way with a runner on first base. They deftly turned two of the Wildcats’ three double plays Tuesday as every time Montrose applied pressure and thought it had momentum, Fruita was merely a slick defensive play away from sending the Indians back to the dugout empty-handed.
That defense and a steady stream of hits kept the Wildcats undefeated through 10 games as they opened Southwestern League play with a 9-2 victory over Montrose, the winner of the past two SWL championships.
