Job description

Debra provides the e-edition of The Daily Sentinel and other educational materials to Western Slope teachers and students at no charge. In her blog “What’s in a Word?” she explores the meaning and etymology of words found in the newspaper.  She contributes to Our Backyard, a regional travel guide published by The Nickel each May through September.


Debra has a bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Missouri-Columbia and a bachelor of arts with teacher certification from Mesa State College, now Colorado Mesa University. She is a remedial student in the school of hard knocks.


A retired literacy teacher, Debra has worked at The Daily Sentinel since August 2007. Before teaching in School District 51 and at Sylvan Learning Center, she held marketing communications positions in the automotive, aerospace and technical translation industries. In her twenties she was a newspaper editor and purser assistant aboard a cruise ship.


Debra enjoys snow skiing, horseback riding, river rafting, reading, discussing books, corresponding with friends and traveling. She has visited about 70 countries, experiencing destinations ranging from the Berlin Wall to the Taj Mahal.
