By Allen Gemaehlich

Don Meyer was told he should see the new Mets Stadium, and while he was at it, check out the new Yankees Stadium, too. Meyer, though, told the Alpine Bank Junior College World Series banquet audience Friday night if he could see one place, it would be a game at the JUCO World Series at Sam Suplizio Field. “It’s not even close,” Meyer said at Two Rivers Convention Center. Meyer plans to be in attendance today. Suplizio Field will always be a special place for Meyer. He ...

By Patti Arnold

As they wandered about Two Rivers Convention Center, dozens of baseball players who will today start playing for a national championship were just a little bit in awe. A group gathered Friday evening in front of the displays from the Alpine Bank Junior College World Series that fill one wall of the convention center. “Wow, Willie Mays was here!” one said as they scanned the list of banquet speakers. They high-fived and fist-bumped youngsters who, shyly at first, asked for ...

JUCO does not start until Saturday, but the “Magic Mud,” which originates in New Jersey, already has come out. The Grand Junction High School ball-shaggers who participated in the long-standing “mud rub” felt as though they were, and will be, part of the game. “Just to have a part of the game of the JUCO World Series, ...

They warmed up longer than they played Monday, and that was just fine with Jefferson (Mo.) College baseball coach Sam Carel. “Literally, we got it done in 10 minutes,” Carel said after the Vikings hit back-to-back doubles to score one run in the bottom of the ninth against Eastern Oklahoma and win 3-2 after the teams were postponed Sunday by lightning and rain. “Our pitcher goes out and has a 1-2-3 inning and we come up in the bottom of the 10th and get a leadoff double ...

By Patti Arnold

It took a little longer than Marc Rardin would have liked, but if it came down to playing one more game and getting home past midnight or not qualifying for the JUCO World Series ... No brainer. “I’ll take it. Whatever it takes,” the Iowa Western Community College baseball coach said Sunday after the top-ranked Reivers bounced back from an 11-8 loss to John A. Logan (Ill.) earlier in the day to win 9-0 in the Northern District title game. Andy Roberts threw a ...
