By Allen Gemaehlich
05/02/2012

It was an easy decision for James Lewis. The Fruita Monument High School senior had always loved track and field and he’s always had an interest in engineering. Wednesday, Lewis paired the two when he signed a national letter of intent with Colorado School of Mines. Fruita track teammate Jaden Koos signed with Colorado Mesa University and Fruita basketball player Alex Padgett signed with Otero Junior College. Lewis competed in the City of Grand Junction Lincoln Park Open meets as ...

Growth evident for Central despite loss to Montrose

By Matt Meyer
04/19/2012

The entire season has been an exercise in patience for the Central High School girls soccer team. After struggling last season, Central has gone from lopsided losses to playing great defensive soccer this spring. To coach Jacob Pingel, the transition became apparent during Tuesday’s 2-0 loss to Montrose. The difficulty is keeping the Warriors, who are winless in league games, playing hard against opponents who are older and have more varsity experience. With only five seniors, the ...

The daughter of two college basketball players, Derrieux grew up in gyms. “It’s just something we do. When we have family over, we go outside and play basketball after dinner,” Derrieux said after signing to play next year at the University of Northern Colorado. “It was never forced but it was never something I didn’t ...

By Patti Arnold
03/04/2012

When he took the job at Colorado School of Mines 11 years ago, Pryor Orser knew he had some work to do. “I have a whole lot of belief in my players. I really believe anything is possible and when I came here to Mines it was probably not a very exciting job per se,” Orser said Saturday after the Orediggers won the RMAC Shootout title 63-47 over Colorado Mesa University. “But you just believe in what you do and go to the grindstone and work and believe in what you’re ...
