Jumping to conclusions

By Nick Walter
05/19/2012

You run and jump. Simple, right? The athlete bounds down the runway, jumps and lands in a pit. But the long jump may be one of the most unknown, and under appreciated, events in track and field. Sprinters are generally unimpressed. Long jumpers, meanwhile, can become agitated. “Most people think you just run and jump, and it’s frustrating,” said Grand Junction long jumper Whitney Jackson, who placed eighth Thursday in the Class 5A state track and field championships. ...

Throwers have high hopes for state meet

By Nick Walter
05/15/2012

In the 44 years he’s officiated local shot put and discus events, George Ryan can’t recall ever seeing a single throw land. Of course, that’s because his job is to keep his head down and watch for a possible scratch. Yet he’s seen plenty of top-flight throws — the spin or glide portion, at least — and this season has witnessed some of the best throwers the Western Slope has produced. With the state track and field meet Thursday through Saturday at ...

Tiger tales

By Nick Walter
03/30/2012

In Lane 2 came Grand Junction High School’s Rachel Gibson, skipping over hurdles and rounding the final turn Friday afternoon, closing the distance from the girl in Lane 7. “Every day we push each other,” Gibson said of the girl in Lane 7. “We just want to beat each other.” The girl in Lane 7 was Gibson’s teammate, Natalie DeRush. Gibson passed DeRush to place first in the 300-meter hurdles in the Warrior Wild West Invitational track meet at Stocker ...

Erickson’s surge in 3,200 relay helps Tigers place second

By Nick Walter
03/24/2012

A body drained from 700 meters of running already flooded Matt Erickson’s mind. In the final 100 meters of the 3,200 relay on Saturday, Grand Junction’s anchor heard a teammate shout: “He’s right behind you.” “He” would be Chuck Bisbee of rival Fruita Monument, who is always a threat to pass runners and break spirits. Erickson needed even a bit more incentive to kick-start more pain. Through sickness, searing soreness in his legs, lungs that ...

Finding a niche

By Nick Walter
03/17/2012

In only its third season, the Grand Gents rugby club team needed to start a fundraiser and sell something in order to thrive. But scented candles? “Just because we’re rugby players,” said Grand Gents hook Jonny Sanchez of Palisade High, “doesn’t mean we don’t like to smell fresh.” On Thursday, Sanchez alone raised $232 by selling candles. But on Saturday afternoon at Dixon Field, the Gents lost 32-0 to the Littleton Eagles. It was the first ...

State wrestlers amazed by environment in Denver

By Nick Walter
02/18/2012

DENVER — The lights hit you just before the crowd. In an instant, the rows of blinding bulbs give way to thousands of chattering heads, perched high above 10 mats, filling the Pepsi Center with a hallow, mumbling chorus. For some newbies to the state wrestling tournament, the figures in the crowd are strangers, and taking to the mat is like being led into the pit of a coliseum in a foreign country. Often far from home, having traveled by bus from cozy, smaller gymnasiums and ...

In a release Saturday, the Rockies said the club will buy 25 uniforms (home and away) for varsity baseball and softball teams for Central, Grand Junction, Fruita Monument and Palisade high schools on a rotating basis, starting this spring. “This gesture from the Grand Junction Rockies will be a tremendous boost to our supply budget,” ...

CHSAA tweaks prep FB playoffs

By Nick Walter
01/20/2012

Beginning in the fall, Class 5A high school football teams who crack the 32-team playoff bracket will be seeded by a committee. The CHSAA football committee decided Thursday teams will continue to qualify for state based on wild-card points, but those points no longer will dictate a team’s seed. Instead, after the 32 teams qualify, a committee comprised of one representative from each conference will vote on a team’s seeding based on head-to-head matchups, common opponents, ...
