Mesa County Administrator Frank Whidden submitted his letter of resignation on Thursday effective immediately, county officials announced today.

Whidden, who had been out on paid leave for undisclosed reasons for several months, said in a one-sentence letter that he wanted "to pursue other opportunities."

Whidden, who had served as administrator since December 2014, was given a 37 percent raise last year, increasing his annual salary to $180,000.

Pete Baier, who had been filling in while Whidden was out, is to continue serving as acting county administrator while the commissioners determine its plan to replace Whidden.
