A Grand Valley Transit bus apparently stopped short near the Veterans Affairs hospital this afternoon, causing a number of injuries to riders and prompting emergency crews to the scene.

Initial radio dispatch traffic indicated that the bus was involved in a crash with another vehicle, but responders at the scene said braking of the bus by the driver led to the rider injuries.

The incident happened before 3 p.m. at 23rd Street and North Avenue, the primary intersection near the VA Medical Center.

One person was taken to a local hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening, according to Grand Junction police.
