Help the Commemorative Air Force Rocky Mountain Wing keep our historic TBM Avenger and J3 Cub flying! Join us June 6-8 in Delta or Montrose to take a ride in the historic Grumman TBM Avenger, the largest single-engine bomber built for WWII. Fully loaded at 18,000 pounds, with a 14-clyinder, 1,900 HP engine, it took off from 500’ aircraft carriers – without a catapult!
If a ride in a historically significant warbird is on your bucket list, you can check it off right here at Delta’s Blake Field or the Montrose Regional Airport. The TBM, designed by Grumman and manufactured by General Motors (!) turned the tide of the War in the Pacific, taking out millions of tons of enemy ships. While our 1945 TBM isn’t a combat veteran, it has a few claims to fame that are hard to beat.
It flew post-War Anti-Submarine Warfare missions from the Royal Navy Aircraft Carrier HMS Magnificent.
It led a multi-plane flyover at Queen Elizabeth’s Coronation Review of the Fleet in 1956.
It appeared in Steven Spielberg’s Close Encounters of the Third Kind.
Most recently, it appeared in the Discovery Channel Gold Rush Series
It is one of only seven Aircraft deemed worthy of listing on the National Register of Historic Places, and is one of only two that is still flying.
Or, you can experience what it was like to try to get your WWII Pilot’s wings in our J3 Cub Trainer – the smallest airplane built for the war. Fully loaded at 1,000 lbs, it’s 65 HP engine hurtles it along at breakneck speeds sometimes exceeding 55 mph! Almost all the WWII pilot wannabes were given 4 hours of dual training, during which time they had to convince their instructor that they had the right stuff; 75% of the wannabes didn’t, and were handed a rifle and a pair of boots, and welcomed into the infantry. Come to one of the Rides Days, and see if you have the right stuff
