Music Scene: UB40 and other area shows for Aug. 23–29

Special to the Sentinel UB40

The reggae band UB40, featuring five of its six founding members, will play a show at 8 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 25, at the Avalon Theatre, 645 Main St.

The band's current lineup is Robin Campbell, Brian Travers, Jimmy Brown, Earl Falconer, Norman Hassan, Duncan Campbell, Martin Meredith, Lawrence Parry and Tony Mullings.

UB40 formed in 1978 in the United Kingdom and took its name from a British unemployment benefit form, according to allmusic.com.

It was led by brothers Robin and Ali Campbell and was known in the '80s for reggae/pop hits including "Red, Red Wine," "I Got You Babe" (featuring the Pretenders' Chrissie Hynde) and "I Can't Help Falling in Love with You."

The 2008 album "Twentyfourseven" was the final release from the band with the original musician lineup.

The band split that year, with Ali Campbell, Michael (Mickey) Virtue and Terence Wilson (aka Astro) forming "UB40 featuring Ali, Astro & Mickey."

The UB40 that will play at the Avalon is led by Robin Campbell and includes a younger brother, Duncan Campbell.

Doors open at 7 p.m. and local reggae outfit Zolopht will open the show. Tickets cost $40–$60 and can be purchased at ticketmaster.com.
