When Rocky Mountain Orthopedics (RMO) became part of SCL Health Medical Group last year, it was a game-changer for orthopedic care in western Colorado. “The scale and resources of being part of an integrated health care system and medical group bring tremendous advantages to both providers and patients,” said Pam Bachorski, administrator for SCL Health Medical Group- RMO. “These advantages ultimately mean better patient care. That is our focus here.”
Originally founded in 1950, RMO was known for decades as the largest, most comprehensive orthopedic group between Denver and Salt Lake City. Today, SCL Health Medical Group-RMO is building on that legacy with enhanced capabilities, easier access to care, improved operational efficiencies and better patient outcomes. “It’s all about the patient experience,” said Bachorski. “SCL Health Medical Group is dedicated to providing the best health care possible. We do this by joining the most experienced and highly trained physicians with advanced systems that empower them to bring their skills fully to bear for the benefit of our patients.”
One of those physicians — Dr. Mary Beth Deering — was recognized by SCL Health as St. Mary’s Physician of the Year. The only board certified and fellowship-trained pediatric orthopedic surgeon on the Western Slope, Deering was chosen for her dedication to and compassion for her young patients. “If it weren’t for Dr. Deering, many children who need specialized orthopedic treatment simply couldn’t get the care they need locally,” said Bachorski. “She is beloved by her patients and highly respected by her peers and richly deserves this award.” In addition to her passion for working with kids, Dr. Deering also has a special interest in adult and pediatric trauma. She served as the first director for the Orthopedic Trauma Service at St. Mary’s Hospital, as well as a member of the St. Mary’s Hospital Trauma Committee for several years. She is also an Advanced Trauma Life Support Instructor and enjoys teaching other physicians, community nurses, and paramedics. “Dr. Deering exemplifies the dedication to patient care that all providers within SCL Health Medical Group share,” said Bachorski.
Orthopedic surgeon and joint replacement specialist Dr. Mark Luker agreed. “We have an amazing group of dedicated orthopedic providers,” he said. “Our objective is to continue to work together to advance what we call the ‘triple aim’ goal of health care: improving quality, cost and patient satisfaction. As part of SCL Health Medical Group we are confident that we can advance this work more quickly to benefit our patients and communities.”
In addition to pediatric orthopedics, SCL Health Medical Group- RMO provides patients with expertise in a variety of sub-specialties including joint replacement, trauma/fracture care, foot & ankle treatment and sports medicine. A team of neurosurgeons from St. Mary’s also see patients at RMO, offering greater expertise and treatment in spine care. The practice also has a deep roster of physician assistants, physical therapists, nurse practitioners and a massage therapist that augment the quality of patient care.
“The operational efficiencies afforded by being part of SCL Health Medical Group have certainly enhanced our capabilities to provide better patient care,” said Bachorski. “We can coordinate better with primary care providers, give our physicians increased access to training programs, provide our patients with on-line educational seminars and much more. But ultimately, it’s about our people. We have the most dedicated and highly trained staff of physicians, therapists and support staff anywhere, all focused on one thing: helping patients reclaim their quality of life.”
