Favorite book and its author: "Beloved" by Toni Morrison

Favorite TV show: "Better Call Saul"

Favorite band or musician: J. Cole or Post Malone

After-school activities: Youth Group, 'The Squad' Student Enrichment Group, St. Mary's volunteering, part-time job at McAlister's Deli

Parents: Damond and Rebecca Hoaglund

Favorite teacher and why: Ms. Heather O'Brien. Being one of her literature students for 3 years, we developed a strong relationship/friendship that continues to last to this day. She has consistently been the greatest mentor that I could possibly have, as I have asked her for life advice upon many occasions and even shared the gritty details of my stress with full confidence in her understanding and care. Her love for her students, her jubilance, her unique attitude, as well as her quirky interests and mannerisms have made her the most prominent teacher in my life.

Personal hero and why: My father. He has persevered throughout life with the best work ethic imaginable, despite his extremely tedious career requirements and work hours, just to care for my family. He continues to be the most caring, humorous, and amazing individual possible. I know that I could never repay him for everything that he has done for me, and credit is long overdue, to which he truly is a hero to me.

Preferred college: Duke University

Dream job: reconstructive surgeon

Highlight of your high school experience: The highlight of my high school experience would have to be the IB Program. That sounds like an oxymoron, as IB is supposed to be 'torture', but I have created so many friendships, developed several, close relationships with my teachers, and expanded my educational horizons all due to the IB Program.

Q: What accomplishment are you the most proud of?

A: I am definitely most proud of how I have grown socially throughout high school. I used to be a fairly quiet child, and I would always get extremely nervous during any period of intensive small talk or when meeting a new person, but I have become far more fluid when meeting new people or giving oral presentations, and I am definitely proud of that. I never thought that I could become as open as I am now.

Q: If you could have dinner with one person, living or dead, who would you choose and why?

A: Elon Musk - That would be my choice of company [and if you're reading this Mr. Musk, dinner would be great]. I have long admired some of the work that Elon Musk has accomplished, and the qualities that have allowed him such immense success with his several diverse business ventures. His ingenuity is astounding to me, and by developing all of the companies that have overcome mass obstacles [such as the Boring Company "Not-a-Flamethrower" flamethrowers] and resulted in success, it would be amazing to just converse over his process and more about him for an evening. I find genius quite intriguing, and Mr. Musk would be some of the best dinner company imaginable.

Q: If you could live anywhere or do anything for one year, what would you do and why?

A: I could definitely travel the globe for a year straight. Although I have not traveled to many places, I know that have a deep admiration for it. There was an article that I had read about how travel can be addicting, and leave you yearning for more the more frequently you do it, and I am definitely afflicted. The world is so different from what we see in this minuscule valley, and there is so much more to understand, learn, and witness. The world possesses so much immaculate beauty and information that it continues to draw my attention, lustfully awaiting my arrival whilst I dream of travel. A year of travel could not completely satisfy my yearning, but it would be a start.

Q: What advice would you give to yourself as a freshman?

A: Run. No, I would tell my freshmen self to be wary of life – it takes turns that are otherwise unexpected, some good, some bad, but everything heals and is overcome with time… just listen to time, little man - you will get through everything, and everything will be okay.
