Stop nets $1 million in cash
Nearly $1 million was seized from a secret compartment in a car traveling on Interstate 70 during a traffic stop by a deputy with the Mesa County Sheriff's Office.
Eugene Zilberman, 35, of Illinois, was pulled over Tuesday near mile marker 10 on I-70 after he was traveling in the left lane without passing anyone.
Before stopping the vehicle, the deputy ran Zilberman's license plate number through a plate-reader system and found it had been tracked in De Beque in June and in California in April.
Zilberman also had very few clothes in the car and said he was driving from Illinois to Las Vegas for a vacation, according to the affidavit.
Zilberman consented to a search of the vehicle, and deputies found a secret compartment in the trunk that opened by connecting wires to a deputies patrol car. Inside were vacuum-sealed bundles of more than $1 million, which a drug-sniffing dog alerted to smelling narcotics.
Zilberman was arrested on suspicion of money laundering.
