Shooting suspect extradited from Mexico

A man wanted in connection with a shooting at a North Avenue Taco Bell in 2011 was extradited from Mexico and on his way to Mesa County, District Attorney Dan Rubinstein announced Friday.

Jaime Cardenas was wanted on charges that include first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, aggravated robbery and first-degree burglary from incidents that occurred July 16, 2011. Jorge Carrasco Jr. was killed in the Taco Bell shooting and two others were wounded.

Cardenas was located in prison in Mexico, where he was first sentenced in 2012. The extradition effort has been ongoing since 2014 and was a joint effort between the 21st Judicial District Attorney's Office, FBI, Department of Justice, Grand Junction Police Department and authorities in Mexico.

Cardenas is in the United States and will be brought to Mesa County. Another suspect in the shooting, Fidel Silva, remains at large and is wanted in connection to the incident.

Construction on River Road on Monday

A portion of River Road from the Riverside Parkway to 23 Road will be under construction beginning Monday, according to an Xcel Energy spokesperson. The project is intended to increase capacity of the gas system in order to accommodate future growth in the area.

BLM: Nelson Ditch fire 75% contained

The Nelson Ditch Fire near Montrose was 75% contained as of Friday afternoon, according to a press release from the Bureau of Land Management.

The fire has consumed 43 acres in the west end of Montrose County as of Friday and continues to burn slowly, according to the release. There are no closures or evacuations associated with the fire but personnel remain on hand, including a hot shot crew, water tender, helicopter and six fire engines. The fire was first reported Wednesday afternoon.

Free legal clinic planned for Thursday

Mesa County Pro Bono Project and Colorado Legal Services Title III Senior Citizen Assistance Program will present a free legal clinic on "Wills, Estate Planning, and Navigating Probate," from 9:30–11:30 a.m. Thursday at Grand Junction City Hall Auditorium, 250 N. Fifth St.

Local attorney and public administrator Charles Reams and attorney Zack Reams will present on the difference between probate and non-probate transfers, appointment of fiduciaries, and who should write a will.
