Grand Valley residents will have an opportunity this week to enroll in the TSA Precheck program that will allow them to skip the security line and leave their shoes on during screening at airports.
The enrollment event will run from Monday through Nov. 20 in the main parking lot at the Grand Junction Regional Airport, 2828 Walker Field Drive. A mobile RV will be in the lot where U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents can pay $85 to sign up for the program. Cash and personal checks will not be accepted as payment. This is the second consecutive year the airport has hosted an enrollment event and the first time the mobile RV has come to Grand Junction.
"We did a Precheck event last year and it was a huge success," airport spokesman Joe Burtard said. "We wanted to do it before the holiday traffic."
With TSA Precheck, identified low-risk travelers will not have to remove shoes, liquids, light jackets or belts while going through security. TSA Precheck has more than 450 lanes at 200-plus airports in the U.S.
Once approved, the travelers will receive a known traveler number that they can add to an airline profile or reservations.
Time slots are limited while the mobile RV is in Grand Junction and appointments are needed in advance.
To start the process, visit identogo.com/precheck and click "start application now," and then "new enrollment." Fill out the steps and choose "next." Type in your location in the airport code box and choose the Grand Junction airport and click "next." Then select an appointment time.
Burtard said parking fees will be waived when people come out for appointments.
To complete the process, travelers will have to bring documentation to prove identity and citizenship.
