Big 5 Sporting Goods will open a new Grand Junction location next month on North Avenue.
The new, 10,000 square-foot sporting goods store will open May 24 at 2401 North Ave. The location previously held a Hastings Books Music and Video store. Big 5 will be the first full-line sporting goods store in the Grand Valley since Sports Authority, a tenant in the Mesa Mall, closed in 2016 after the company filed for bankruptcy.
The valley does have a Cabela's, Sportsman's Warehouse and Gene Taylor's Sports Outlet, which mostly focus on outdoor pursuits.
"The emphasis in all Big 5 stores is on providing a wide selection of top quality, nationally recognized brand name sporting goods, while also focusing on providing friendly, knowledgeable service to our customers," Big 5 President and CEO Steve Miller said in a press release. "We are very excited about opening our newest store in Grand Junction's vibrant market and believe the new location will enhance our proven ability to successfully fulfill the needs of sports enthusiasts in the community."
Grand Junction Area Chamber of Commerce Business Retention and Expansion Specialist C.J. Rhyne said the store will be a great addition to the community. "The area needs a sporting goods store to service all the activities we have here," he said. I hope and feel that we will continue to gain more stores like that."
The Grand Junction Big 5 will be open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 9:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Friday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday.
A celebration to kick off the store's grand opening will start May 26 with a Memorial Day sale and promotion.
