A woman found dead at the Mesa County jail six days before Christmas died due to complications related to chronic alcoholism, according to the Mesa County Coroner.
Brittany Matthews, 36, was found unresponsive in her jail cell the morning of Dec. 19 and was later pronounced dead. Coroner Victor Yahn reported that her death was natural and was caused by her alcoholism. Matthews was in jail on a failure to appear warrant.
Matthews’ death was the first of two in a four-day span at the jail. On Dec. 23, Jeffrey Beagley, 34, was found unresponsive in his cell and later died at St. Mary’s Medical Center. His death was a ruled a suicide by hanging. Beagley was facing first-degree murder charges related to the death of a 9-year-old girl.
