The effects of heavy runoff and a wet spring were being felt by users of the Riverfront Trail Saturday, as a number of sections closed due to flooding and safety concerns.
Mesa County said Saturday that the trail's Kokopelli section flooded, where the trail goes under Interstate 70, and the Monument section similarly was flooded where the trail goes under Redlands Parkway.
The county also said that the Blue Heron section closed between High Country Court and north of the Glacier Ice Rink.
River levels were expected to remain high through the weekend. The National Weather Service has a flood advisory in effect for the Gunnison River above Grand Junction. Flood stage for the Gunnison in that area, according to the weather service, is 13 feet.
As of 9 a.m. Saturday the river was at 11.5 feet and was expected to hit 11.8 feet after midnight Sunday.
