Mercado to coach Jr. National team
Colorado Mesa women’s wrestling coach Travis Mercado has been selected to coach the women’s freestyle junior national team at the 2020 Junior Pan American Games.
“I am ecstatic to be chosen to coach with Team USA and some of our nation’s best junior level athletes,” Mercado said in a release on the CMU website.
The Junior Pan Am Games are July 10-12 in Rio de Janeiro. Mercado has international coaching experience with the Cadet National Team (ages 15-17) at the Lady Klippan Tournament in Sweden in 2015 and a year later was on the coaching staff for the Junior National team in the Junior Pan Am Games.
Mavs picked second in RMAC poll
Colorado Mesa was picked to finish second in the RMAC this season in a poll conducted by conference coaches.
The Mavericks have won the past four RMAC championships and received three first-place votes to finish second in the voting behind Dixie State, which is in its final season in the conference before transitioning to Division I.
Three CMU players are on the “players to watch” list, All-American first baseman AnnMarie Torres, last year’s RMAC player of the year, and outfielders Brooke Doumer, who was an all-region selection last season, and Sarah Staudle, who won a Gold Glove last season as one of the best-fielding outfielders in the conference.
Also on the conference watch list is Central High School graduate Tyler Hays, a senior shortstop/third baseman at Adams State.
