Colorado Mesa coach Sullivan wins Senior Match Play championship
Colorado Mesa men's golf coach Scott Sullivan won the Colorado Golf Association's Senior Match Play championship on Thursday at The Meadows Golf Club in Littleton.
Sullivan, playing out of Bookcliff Country Club, defeated Steve Ivan of Patty Jewett Golf Course 5 and 4 in the championship match. In the semifinals, Sullivan ousted defending champion John Hornbeck of Collindale Golf Club (Wyoming) 4 and 2 after winning his quarterfinal match on Wednesday 2 and 1 against Gary Albrecht of CommonGround Golf Club.
Sullivan never trailed in the championship match, using an eagle on the fourth hole to take a 2-up lead and birdied No. 9 to lead by three holes. He then made three straight birdies on the back nine and halved the 14th hole with a par to clinch the match.
Sullivan, 61, has won the CGA Western Chapter senior championship before, but this was his first state CGA title. His 5 and 4 win in the championship match was the largest in the CGA senior match play tournament since 1999.
