GREELEY — The University High School football team has been the underdog in both of its games in the Class 2A playoffs.

That hasn’t bothered the 12th-seeded Bulldogs, who scored their second straight upset, beating fifth-seeded Delta 28-14 on Saturday in the 2A quarterfinals.

After forcing University to punt on its first drive, the Panthers (9-2) scored with 9:23 left in the first quarter. The Bulldogs (7-4) responded with a touchdown pass from quarterback Greg Garza to Kanon Padilla to tie the game at 7-7.

A Garza interception led to a rushing touchdown for Delta and a 14-7 lead in the second quarter. Garza didn’t let the interception faze him, throwing a touchdown pass to Tayt Chacon with 29 seconds to go before halftime to tie it again, this time at 14-14.

Padilla, who finished with 66 yards receiving, made the play of the game on the Panthers’ first drive of the second half. The senior intercepted a pass from Delta’s Ty Reed and returned it 61 yards for a touchdown and a 21-14 lead.

After trading punts for the rest of the third quarter, the Bulldogs iced the game with a final touchdown. Garza, who finished with 186 yards passing, used his legs this time, scoring a rushing touchdown to give University a 28-14 lead.
