Going for a sweep of a three-game series against Orem at UCCU Ballpark, the Grand Junction Rockies sent left-hander Hector Olivarez to the mound Monday night.
Olivarez had allowed only two runs in nine innings in his first two starts. Against the Owlz, Olivarez was victimized by the long ball, allowing three home runs in 3 2/3 innings as the Rockies lost 12-5.
Jeremiah Jackson opened the scoring for Orem with a solo home run in the first inning, but the Rockies rebounded in the second. Colin Simpson led off with a triple, Christian Koss followed with a double and Owen Taylor drove in Koss with a double. Taylor eventually scored on an RBI groundout by Jack Yalowitz.
Leading 3-1, Olivarez got two quick outs before an error allowed Jose Quezada to reach. Will Wilson then hit a two-run home run to tie the game 3-3.
Orem (8-15) erupted for five runs in the fourth inning, including a two-run home run by Jose Verrier, which knocked Olivarez out of the game.
Alejandro Mejia relieved Olivarez and got out of the fourth, but the right-hander ran into trouble in the fifth inning. The Owlz led off the inning with back-to-back doubles and an RBI single by Kevin Arias increased the lead to 10-3. With two outs, Jackson hit his second home run, a two-run shot to put Orem ahead 12-3.
Peyton Gray, who was added to the Rockies' roster Monday, pitched a scoreless sixth inning, with two strikeouts. Trysten Barlow and Juan Mejia each pitched a scoreless inning, Barlow the seventh and Juan Mejia the eighth.
Grand Junction (12-11), scored its final two runs in the eighth inning, with Julio Carreras hitting a sacrifice fly and Koss adding his second RBI with a single to left.
After a day off today, the Rockies return home for an eight-game homestand against two teams from the Pioneer League North Division, Great Falls and Billings.
