Fruita Monument to host Class 5A wrestling regional

Grand Junction senior JT Skalecki will be one of many Class 5A wrestlers to compete in this weekend's regional at Fruita Monument High School.

Fruita Monument High School will be host the Class 5A Region 1 wrestling tournament on Feb. 15-16.

The tournament will have 14 teams competing with the top four wrestlers in each weight class earning a berth to the state tournament starting Thursday, Feb. 21.

The top-ranked team in 5A, Pomona, will be at the tournament as well as No. 6 Monarch and No. 9 Arvada West.

Thirteen wrestlers ranked in top three in their weight classes in 5A will be competing, that includes four No. 1-ranked wrestlers and six at No. 2 including Fruita Monument senior Keegan Bailey at 195 pounds. Heavyweight Casey Hudson is now ranked No. 4 for the Wildcats.

The tournament starts at 4 p.m. Friday with first and second round matches, and consolation matches.

The Saturday schedule starts at 9 a.m. with will. Third-place and other placer matches begin at 1 p.m. and the championship round will start at 1:45 p.m.

Ticket prices are as follows:

■ All tournament pass: Adults $18; students and seniors (60+) $15

■ Friday session: Adults $8; students and seniors $6

■ Saturday all day: Adults $13; students and seniors $10

■ Finals only: Adults $8; students and seniors $6

Other regionals

No. 3-ranked Grand Junction will be at Westminster High School for the 5A Region 3 Tournament. The Tigers have four wrestlers ranked in the top four of their respective weight classes.

Hunter Tobiasson, who is undefeated on the season, is No. 1 at 220, returning state champion Dawson Collins is No. 2 at 120, JT Skalecki is No. 2 at 170, and Kieran Thompson is No. 4 at 113.

Skalecki will be in one of the toughest weight classes in any regional tournament in the state with the top four-ranked wrestlers all competing in the Region 3 Tournament at 170 pounds.

Central will be at Thomas Jefferson High School for the 4A Region 1 Tournament along with Palisade and Montrose.

Central is ranked No. 7 in 4A, and the region also includes No. 1-ranked Windsor.

The Warriors have six wrestlers ranked in the top seven including Connor Shenk (220) at No. 3 and Dre Martinez (138) at No. 5.

The Montrose Events Center will host both the Class 2A Region 1 and Class 3A Region 1 tournaments.

In 3A, Delta, Olathe, Rifle and Grand Valley will compete as well as Alamosa, the No. 1-ranked team.

One of the most intriguing wrestlers in the 3A region is returning state champion AJ Serna From Grand Valley. The senior was injured on Dec. 8 but recently returned to win three matches at 120 pounds.

Delta has three wrestlers ranked in the top seven including Aiden Barrios (170) at No. 3.

Olathe also has three ranked in the top seven with Clay Yarnell (145) at No. 3.

The 2A Western Slope regional is always one of the toughest and most competitive in the state, and this year is no different, with one exception. No. 4-ranked Cedaredge will compete at John Mall High School in the Region 2 Tournament.

The Region 1 Tournament will include No. 3-ranked Paonia, No. 5 Highland and No. 9 Hotchkiss.

There will be 18 wrestlers who are ranked in the top five of their weight classes competing in the region. That includes 10 top-three wrestlers and three at No. 1 — Grey Neal (160) and Anthony Felice (195) for Paonia, and Meeker's Tannen Kennedy (145)

Cedaredge will have No. 6 John Mall and No. 8 Centauri in its region.

The region will feature 12 wrestlers ranked in the top five with three at No. 1.

The Bruins have Trey Geyer (120) and Sean Dale (132) ranked No. 1, and Rye has Michael Atencio (113) at No. 1.

Every regional in the state concludes on Saturday.

The top four will advance to the Pepsi Center for the state tournament Feb. 21-23.
